FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Firefighters rescued a man and his dog from a canal Tuesday afternoon in Fresno, according to the Fresno Fire Department.

Firecrews responded to multiple calls around 2 p.m. of a man and his dog being stuck in the canal near Abby Street and Olive Avenue, according to officials. Fresno Fire says they found the man in the canal holding the dog and trying to grip the side of the canal.

The first crews on scene went down to the canal bank and held onto the man to keep him from being swept away by the current, according to Fresno Fire. Officials say the crews held onto him while they waited for water rescue crews to arrive.

Once water rescue arrived, they were able to safely pull the dog and the man out of the water, according to fire crews. Officials say the man was then transported to the hospital for injuries sustained from debris rushing through the canal. The dog was not injured, according to officials.

During the investigation, fire crews determined that the dog had jumped into the canal and the man jumped in attempting to save his pet.

“We are grateful and fortunate that crews could get to him and the dog in time,” said Fresno Fire.
