FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The man who was killed in a fire shortly after neighbors reported hearing an explosion in Fresno has been identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday.

On July 15, Fresno Fire reported responding to an apartment fire near First and Clinton avenues, where they encountered neighbors actively trying to extinguish the flames.

Neighbors reported hearing an explosion from the origin of the flames and added the man who lived inside was bedridden and used an oxygen tank.

Neighbors advised firefighters on scene that a man was possibly trapped inside; however, when crews went to check, he was pronounced deceased.

The coroner’s office identified that man as 83-year-old James Lowery of Fresno.

Due to the shared attic space of the four-unit apartment building, crews said the fire spread quickly and ultimately displaced 15 residents.

The cause of the fire has not been officially released.
