As communities across the nation prepare to celebrate 250 years of American independence, one of the Sierra’s longest-running arts organizations is inviting residents and visitors to mark the occasion with an evening of music under the stars.

The Mariposa Yosemite Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Independence Day Spectacular on Saturday, June 27, at the Episcopal Conference Center Oakhurst (ECCO), concluding the orchestra’s 21st anniversary season and 24th year of bringing symphonic music to the Yosemite region.

The 7 p.m. concert will once again take place at ECCO, located just north of Oakhurst along Highway 41. Set against the backdrop of a small lake, illuminated fountain, and surrounding natural beauty, the venue offers an atmosphere unlike any traditional concert hall.

For many attendees, the setting itself has become part of the experience.

The orchestra first performed at ECCO last year after relocating its longtime Independence Day concert from Yosemite’s historic Wawona Hotel, which remains closed during extensive renovation work. The response was overwhelmingly positive, establishing a new tradition for the orchestra and its audiences.

Founded in 2002 by conductor and composer Les Marsden, the Mariposa Yosemite Symphony Orchestra has spent more than two decades providing access to live orchestral music in the Sierra Nevada foothills and Yosemite gateway communities. During that time, the organization has become a cultural fixture for the region, performing for thousands of residents and visitors while helping bring professional-quality symphonic performances to an area far removed from major metropolitan arts centers.

This year’s program celebrates America’s 250th anniversary through a collection of patriotic favorites and works by composers whose music has become deeply associated with the American experience.

Among the featured selections are two beloved works by Aaron Copland, often regarded as one of America’s most influential composers. Audiences will hear the suite from Appalachian Spring, known for its evocative portrayal of rural American life, as well as the Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo, including the energetic and widely recognized “Hoe-Down.”

The concert will also include Morton Gould’s playful interpretation of Yankee Doodle, music by George Gershwin, traditional Sousa marches, Dr. Phillip Smith’s Armed Forces Salute, and the world premiere of a revised version of Marsden’s own A Cowboy Overture, originally composed in 2011.

Together, the selections are designed to celebrate both America’s history and the diverse musical traditions that have helped shape the nation’s cultural identity.

While fireworks often take center stage during Independence Day celebrations, organizers believe there is something uniquely powerful about gathering outdoors to hear live music performed by local musicians against the backdrop of the Sierra foothills.

As the sun sets and the stars emerge above the lake at ECCO, audiences will have the opportunity to experience a distinctly local celebration of a national milestone.

Advance tickets are strongly recommended and are available for $10 for adults and $8 for students. Ticket prices increase at the door. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring flashlights for navigating after dark and may also wish to bring mosquito repellent.

Tickets can be purchased online, and additional program information and concert notes will be available through the Mariposa Yosemite Symphony Orchestra website.

The Mariposa Yosemite Symphony Orchestra operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the Collaborative Arts and Culture Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting arts and cultural programs throughout the region.

As America approaches its 250th birthday, the orchestra’s annual Independence concert offers a reminder that celebrations are not only about looking back at history, but also about gathering as a community to share in traditions that continue to bring people together.
