NORTH FORK, CA – You create your reality through your thoughts and attitude.  People with a “positive” attitude are more satisfied with life and are physically healthier.  They also have better outcomes when they do face challenges, whether emotional or physical.  A positive attitude will frame setbacks as temporary or solvable.  A negative attitude may interpret the same situation as overwhelming or hopeless.  An optimistic mindset makes you more resilient and able to cope with life’s inevitable stresses.

Your attitude shapes your inner thoughts and emotions, as well as how you interact with others.  A positive attitude results in an internal dialogue that is more self-compassionate, hopeful, and motivated.  A more open, understanding mindset can improve relationships, which are key to emotional health.

Having a positive outlook does not mean you never feel “negative” emotions, such as sadness or anger.  You may need negative emotions to move through difficult situations and respond to them appropriately in the short term.  Catch yourself if you are ruminating too much on the past, or worrying too much about the future.  Stay focused on what is happening in the here and now.

How can you build a positive mindset?  Focus on your strengths and positive qualities.  Make a list to remind yourself.  Ask loved ones to help you if you are struggling.  Shift your attention to the positive, and be more optimistic.  Imagine the best-case scenarios, or the good things that may happen in the future.  Focus your attention on something pleasurable as it occurs, consciously enjoying the experience.  Not just special moments, but everyday pleasures such as a meal or a visit with a friend.  Notice the beauty of nature around you.

People who count their blessings feel happier.  Every day make a gratitude list, whether it is written or simply in your mind.  Over time it will be easier to recognize things to be thankful for.

Catch yourself if you are blaming someone or something outside of yourself.  Learn to take responsibility in your life, and ask yourself what you can do in any given situation.

Another very helpful strategy is to control your inputs.  What you choose to expose yourself to affects your attitude.  Reduce your consumption of the overwhelmingly negative and sensationalist news and social media.  Even consider staying away from these completely for a period of time.  Avoid toxic conversations.  Instead focus on content that is constructive or inspiring for you.

Choose an attitude of love, playfulness, awe, curiosity, serenity, and gratitude in more moments of your life.  You will be amazed at how much better you feel.
