Fire behavior is moderate with running, flanking and backing.

The fire environment is conducive for large fire growth because all elements for extreme fire behavior are present. Live and dead fuel moistures are at critical levels (pre-green up) and D3 extreme drought conditions. The area has seen very little snow over the winter month with above average temperatures for the months of February and March. Predominant fuels consists of heavy to moderate loading of grass, eastern red cedar, and cottonwood/maple tree in drainage bottoms. In addition, numerous agricultural fields, near numerous values at risk.

Areas of concern include –

Fire spread is dependent on existing uncontrolled flame fronts and residual heat in drainages and cattail areas. Potential still exists for wind driven runs and wide flame fronts on both fires that can threaten communities and railroad infrastructure. Very high rates of spread due to near record high temps and dry fuels.

Expect high rates of spread and flame lengths with any initial attack fire with moderate to high resistance to control.
