The Huron-Manistee National Forests Fire and Aviation Management Unit is preparing for prescribed fire operations.

Rx burns are planned events that are matched to predetermined weather/fuel parameters. We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled. Updates including cancellations, additions and corrections will be added to this post.

These prescribed fires reduce risk to the public by removing hazardous vegetation to mitigate wildfires and prevent loss of property. They also help to re-establish fire’s positive role in local ecosystems, increase native plant regeneration and improve wildlife habitat and forest health. 

During active burning, smoke and flames may be visible from roads and in areas downwind of the burn site. Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road. For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow online or download the app. 

Residents and motorists may also encounter roadblocks, specially trained fire personnel and heavy equipment, such as engines and dozers, performing Rx Fire operations. 

The planned prescribed fires listed below are organized by ranger district, county and township. Respective recreational trails and sites may close for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns. 

Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through the forest website, social media channels, and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system. We will notify county emergency management officials when burning begins. If you wish to be notified about prescribed fires in your vicinity, contact your nearest District Ranger Office.

Firefighters will monitor the burn area for days following the burn.
