TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man is dead after he was shot by a deputy following an incident outside Porterville on Tuesday, according to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the shooting took place just before 11:30 a.m. near Plano Street and River Avenue, on the Tule River. Officials say the suspect was wielding a two-to-three-foot-long stick, and a taser had already proven ineffective.

According to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, deputies first made contact with the suspect on Monday, when they were patrolling an area of the Tule River near the Plano Bridge outside Porterville. They tried telling the man he was trespassing in the area, but he ran away.
On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office says they tried to make contact with the same person again, and he ran off a second time. Deputies attempted again to make contact with the man, but they say he became violent and resisted. A taser was used to try to subdue the suspect, but that was ineffective, according to officials.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office states that the suspect then grabbed a two-to-three-foot-long stick and swung it at the deputies. That prompted the deputy to fire his gun and shoot the suspect; the suspect died at the scene.
The Porterville Police Department is investigating the shooting. The deputy involved was placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
The identities of those involved have not been officially released.
