MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The three teenagers and a 25-year-old man who died in a crash after fleeing from deputies near Madera over the weekend have been identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.
According to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, it was early Sunday morning when deputies responded to reports of people breaking into vehicles near El Vado Drive and Avenue 18 ½ in Madera County.
As deputies approached the vehicle matching the description given to them, the vehicle sped away. Authorities say the vehicle lost control and crashed into the concrete barrier on the Avenue 17 on-ramp to northbound Highway 99. CHP says four people inside the car were killed at the scene.
The coroner identified the deceased as:
- 13-year-old Stephen Rodriguez
- 15-year-old Benito Mendoza
- 15-year-old David Daza Perez
- 25-year-old Juan Perez Quezada
A fifth person who was also in the vehicle, an 18-year-old, was airlifted to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, while the Madera County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the reported burglaries. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office managed the official identification of those killed.
