IDENTIFIED: Grandmother, grandson killed in Fresno apartment fire

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The man and woman who died in a fire at a senior living complex on Tuesday morning were identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday.

The coroner identified the victims as 66-year-old Rita Avila and 22-year-old Joseph Irelan, both of Fresno. Deputies add that Avila was Irelan’s grandmother.

According to Fresno Fire, they responded to the Willow Retirement Center on Butler Avenue on Tuesday morning, where they found Irelan and Avila dead inside, along with four cats and a dog.

Investigators said the fire started in the living room and may have moved to the attic. The neighboring units were evacuated at the time of the fire.
