Former Fresno Police detective arrested

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A former detective with the Fresno Police Department was arrested Thursday, police said. He is being accused of checking out cash from the evidence locker and not returning it in May 2024.

Fresno Police said that due to the criminal implications and concern that the theft could be part of a larger-scale problem, they requested the FBI’s help by conducting a full, independent criminal investigation.

An internal administrative investigation resulted in the termination of the former detective in June 2025.

On Oct. 9, after an extensive criminal investigation, the FBI, in coordination with the California Department of Justice (DOJ), took the former detective into custody. Police said he was taken into custody for multiple violations of California state law.

The DOJ has not yet released a name for the former detective.

Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto said that she is “deeply troubled by the former detective’s conduct.”
