The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest is planning prescribed fire operations beginning this week, pending all required approvals. We estimate this work to continue through mid-October as weather conditions allow. We use prescribed fires to help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.

Prescribed fires planned for early fall include:

  • Rocky Mountain Ranger District – 150 acres in Benchmark corridor, west of Augusta (combo of broadcast & piles) in late September/early October.
  • Belt Creek-White Sulphur Springs Ranger District – 260 acres 15 miles northeast of White Sulphur Springs, anticipated near the end of September.
  • Townsend Ranger District – 71 acres in Cabin Gulch, east of Townsend, likely near end of September.
  • Helena Ranger District – 3,500 acres across multiple project areas (i.e., Tenmile-South Helena, Telegraph, and Middleman). This work will begin in the Travis Creek area (Wednesday) and Wakina Sky area in Helena’s South Hills (Thursday) during the week of Sept. 21.

Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. Go to https://fire.airnow.gov/ to find more detailed information about air quality. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled.
